Ben drove out to the farm they were going to look at, hands tapping the steering wheel in time with one country singer after the other. He was trying not to bounce too hard, but he had a really good feeling about this place. The price was good and there was likely to be more than enough money to do lots of renovations, adding on stuff for various animal habitats and stuff. And they could always rent out the main acreage to local farmers for corn or hay or their herds.
He tried not to get ahead of himself. They still hadn't seen the place and they'd only just started talking about buying their own place, Kota might not be ready to move for ages.
And he didn't want to be insensitive to how this might be hard on Kota. Really hard.
The man had been mostly quiet the whole ride out, which had turned out to be not quite as far as they'd thought. "This is it coming up."
"Oh, that wasn't a bad drive." There was a little mailbox and a big iron gate that was unlocked. Kota hopped out and 242

opened it for him, the late spring wildflowers everywhere, painting everything a bright color. There was a long lane lined with apple trees, the house itself hidden around a bend by a grove of tall poplars. As they rounded the bend the house came into view. It was a huge old farmhouse, two stories with what looked like a wraparound porch. The barn was beyond it, brightly painted the traditional red.
A dog came bounding out from the barn, barking madly.
Kota's laugh was rich, low, fine enough to send a shiver up his spine. "Now, would you look at all this?"
He grinned over at his lover, so pleased to hear Kota's laughter. "We really could have a zoo here," he teased.
"Oh, this place is..." Kota stepped out of the truck, eyes on the passel of puppies following their momma out into the yard. "Well, look at y'all..."
He chuckled. Well if the farmhouse and barn and pond and pool and trees didn't sell Kota on the place, there was nothing like some critters to do the job. Pat, the real estate agent (with a boxer named Charlie and two persians named Yang and Yin, so Kota had explained on the drive over) waited for them on the porch, hair blowing, looking way overdressed to be standing in front of this older house.
Kota was checking out puppies and momma and laughing, happy and relaxed in the sunshine. Ben fell in love with the man all over again. God, Kota was a beautiful man and nothing suited him better than happiness and critters. He went over and said hi to Pat. "You sure the owners don't mind us popping in unannounced like this?"

She gave him a grin, shook her head. "The house is empty. Mrs. Caruthers was moved to a home three months ago and her family put the place on the market.
